FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

RECORDS FALL ON HISTORIC WEEKEND AT BROADFORD

190 riders from all over Australia enjoyed gallantly competition and new race records during the extremely successful running of the 2013 Victorian Historic Road Racing Championships at Broadford's State Motorcycle Sports Complex on the weekend of April 6-7.

Four records were broken over two days of scintillating racing on a track enveloped in warm autumn sunshine. On Saturday, April 6 Ian Glover recorded  the fastest time on a 1971 Yamaha AS3 125 in the 125cc PC class with a 1:14.008

Bruce Marston and Graham Marston on a 1962 Harley Sport 1000 Sidecar also made history by recording a 1:15.639 in the Classic Sidecars class. The Victorian Historic Road Racing Championships also ran in conjunction with the 2013 Victorian Formula 2 Sidecar Championship.

On Sunday, Jack Wright impressively beat his own record in the Unlimited Classic class by a second, recording a 1:04.948 on his Harley.

Michael Dibb of T-Rex Racing also broke the lap record in the Period 5 Unlimited Forgotten Era class clocking a remarkable time of 59.304 on a 1982 Honda Harris 1150, and was pretty impressed with the bike: "It was a good ride. I thought I actually went slowly but that's the advantage of being on a really good bike, it makes it easy for you," Michael said.

Asked what he liked most about the bike, Michael replied: "It's fast! I don't want to put anyone else's bike down – and of course I'm incredibly biased – but I think it's got to be the best bike here, I love it.

"I'd really like to thank Rex (Wolfenden) for letting me ride his bike," Michael added.

In continuing his awesome form from last year's championship, Colin Heather, also returning from injury, won the 500cc Forgotten Era class. "The bike has been going really well. We ran on the old engine this weekend and it seems to be going alright," Colin said.

"I've been riding to the best of my ability. It's been great riding on faster bikes with non-equivalent machinery on a 500cc against bigger bikes and stirring them up," Colin continued.

"I'd like to thank my Dad and mum, brother, and Dave Jones who built my engine," Colin added.

Historic Motorcycle Racing Association of Victoria club president Brian March was immensely impressed with how the weekend turned out: "We've had an awesome event. It's been very tight racing. The Sidecar racing has been fast and furious," Brian remarked.

"The presentation and the preparation of the bikes have really improved over the years so the old stories about old bikes leaking oil isn't the case anymore."

Asked what he liked most about the sport, Brian replied: "This discipline is great if you're into old bikes and enjoy doing a bit of work on them yourself and seeing how you can make them run better. (Joining a) competition is a good safe way to come and try out your theories, try out your riding skills, and try out your bike.

"There is nothing safer than being on a race track. Everyone's going in the same direction, if there is any obstacles they wave a flag, if you break down they bring you a trailer, and if you hurt yourself they bring you an ambulance. It's a lot better than going fast out through the Dandenong's.

"The camaraderie amongst the racers is second to none. Guys will give you a part you need – they'll even take it off their own bike if they have to – to keep you running. It's like a big family. It's a brilliant sport with no next year's model of bike.

"Our volunteers have been fantastic as well. We've got a whole lot of support, from sponsors to officials, and this can't have happened without the hundreds of thousands of people behind the scenes," Brian added.

HMRAV will also be involved in the Historic Winton in May 25-26, the Mt Terrengower Hillclimb on October 12-13 and of course their big showcase event – the Southern Classic – on October 26-27. The club also holds two Come 'n' Try Days a year where anyone with a good attitude can get involved and also supports the Girls Only Track Days, providing Sidecars for participants.
