2013 Honda Broadford Bike Bonanza – BIG!

The State Motorcycle Complex at Broadford is the place to be this Easter, with the fifth running of the Honda Broadford Bike Bonanza (HBBB) set to be the biggest yet.

The headline act this year is a celebration of the Velocette marque, and around 150 examples of the iconic British machines are expected to be on track and on display. As well as Velo singles and twins from Thruxtons down to LEs and everything in between, there will be a mouthwatering array of racing models, including all three of Motorcycling Australia's famous locally-brewed 250s – the DOHC Eldee built by Les Deiner, the DOHC Hunter 250, and the amazingly successful MOV Special built and raced by Bob Elsbury.

There will also be KTTs representing the illustrious chain of factory racing Velos that garnered many TT wins and the initial 350 cc World Championship. If you would like to join the Velo action and have a suitable bike, contact Richard Fanning on 03 9877 7007 or 0408 303409.

At the other end of the scale, a special tribute to the mighty Honda RC30 will put around a dozen of these exotic and highly-prized V4s on track over the weekend. Of particular note are the two ex-Honda Australia Winfield Team bikes raced to Australian title successes by Troy Corser and Anthony Gobert, the former owned by Western Motorcycles Penrith dealer Ray Moodie which will be ridden by former top Production Racer Richard Scoular. The sister machine is owned by Melbourne-based Peter Howes, who will also be bringing his delectable Castrol Honda RC45 that was ridden at Eastern Creek last year by Scott Campbell.

Add to this trio a host of other pristine examples of the bikes Honda commissioned to snare the inaugural World Superbike Championship in 1988 and you have the biggest collection of RC30/45s ever seen together in this country. It's a sight (and sound) not to be missed.

For Ducati fans, Easter is the chance to see Ken Magee reunited with the motorcycle that set him on the path to GP glory – the Bob Brown Ducati. This giant-killing Pantah-based machine pre-dated many of the actual factory developments and people still talk about Magee hounding the bigger bikes on tight circuits like Winton. After Kevin left for overseas, the Ducati was ridden by talented Kiwis Aaron Slight and Robert Holden, before being sold to a collector in Spain. Easter will mark the bike's first public appearance for over 20 years.

To ensure maximum enjoyment and safety, much stricter grading of riders will be a feature of the road bike classes on the weekend. Organiser Peter Drakeford said, "This section gets bigger every year and we want to ensure that riders of roughly equal ability share the track, so the road bikes will be split into three sections. This was instigated last year and worked reasonably well, but we will be monitoring all sessions and re-grading riders if necessary."

Of course, the road race circuit is only one of the attractions at Broadford, and around the rest of the complex there will be non-stop action that patrons can access via the free shuttle buses that run all weekend. A feature will be a much bigger trials section, a display of Australian Safari bikes, the ever-popular Enduro loop, speedway, dirt track and non-stop action on the motocross circuit.

Tickets for Saturday night's gala dinner at the Mitchell Shire Function Centre in Broadford are already selling fast. Last year's dinner was a great success, with everyone praising the standard of food, with wines from the award-winning Tahbilk Winery available at very reasonable prices. Throughout the evening, interviews will be conducted with the stars of this year's HBBB.

The 2013 Honda Broadford Bike Bonanza is once again proudly supported by Honda, who has played an integral role in establishing and supporting the event since its inception in 2009.
