Subject: Race Day Info.
Hi Everyone,
I just want to give a bit of advice regarding protective equipment requirements and bike preparation to those who attend our Dirt Track race days, in particular to the newer members who are just starting out in the sport.
Along with the usual helmet, goggles, gloves, boots etc entrants are required to have:
Back and shoulder protection.
Elbow guards.
Knee guards.
I realize than this may be an added cost to some but remember that the gravel surface of the dirt track is very abrasive and in the event of a fall a Motocross jersey offers very little protection. A modest outlay now can save a great deal of discomfort later on.
When it comes to bikes, a number of things are checked at scrutineering on race days and the emphasis is on safety. Particular attention is paid to:
Proper function of the brakes.
Loose or broken spokes.
The throttle must be self closing.
Handlebar ends must be securely plugged.
Clutch and brake levers to have ball ends.
Sidestands are to be removed with the exception of 50cc bikes (but they must have the stands secured in the up position). Stands are ok on practice days.
Other things such wheel bearings, suspension action, steering etc are checked too. If you have a well maintained bike you shouldn’t have any concerns.
All of the above is straight out of the Motorcycling Australia rule book and they are of course aimed at one thing, safety. It’s an issue that can’t be overlooked or shortcuts taken with and is something that we at the Harley Club take very seriously.
So if you have any questions about anything I’ve said here, please feel free contact me.
See you at the track,
Rob
