July 27, 2011

Dear Clubs,

2011  ROAD RACE FORUM A SUCCESS

MOTORCYCLING Victoria hosted a successful and constructive Road Race Forum on Sunday, July 9 at Yarraville in which scores of road race administrators, officials, riders and passionate enthusiasts voiced their opinions on their sport.

The six hour discussion covered numerous issues such as junior development, Motorcycling Victoria's road race committee, the State Motorcycle Sports Complex's Road Broadford Circuit, Victoria's road race clubs, the discipline's dedicated volunteers, as well as the racing calendar, to name just a few.

"It was so good to see so many people come to attend the forum, and there really was a great representation of the road race community on the day," Motorcycling Victoria's CEO Mr Andrew Weiss said.

The forum, which was attended by over 40 people, was a unique opportunity for the discipline's participants to voice their opinion on the future direction of road racing in Victoria.

"Everyone present had the opportunity to talk about how they felt, and we began working together to look at ways in which we can improve the sport for all in Victoria," Mr Weiss added.

The forum also raised matters pertinent to the Victorian Road Race Championships, the state's premier road race competition, like promotion, racing classes, and rider sponsorship.

"This forum really is just the first step in a long process. It really was an important step so that we could gauge where the sport is currently at, so that we can start carefully planning ahead.

"MV's Road Race Committee, together with MV's Board and staff members, will review the feedback that came out of the forum, and will start looking at realistic and achievable ways to address many of the issues which arose," Mr Weiss stated.

MV SCORES VICHEALTH GRANT

MOTORCYCLING Victoria has been given a $341,762 VicHealth grant over three years to help make the sport of motorcycling more attractive to women and girls.

One of 30 VicHealth State Sporting Association Participation Program grant recipients in Victoria, MV will implement state-wide initiatives designed to bring about sustainable organisational and cultural change to boost community participation in sports over the next three years.

"With less than 7 per cent of Victoria's membership-base consisting of female participants, MV has taken proactive steps to improve this area. This grant will go a long way to improve the sport for women and girls in Victoria," Motorcycling Victoria's CEO Andrew Weiss said.

VicHealth's Acting CEO Associate Professor John Fitzgerald said State Sporting Associations play an essential role in encouraging people to get active for general good health and chronic illness prevention.

"With obesity and Type 2 diabetes on the rise, it's very concerning that two-thirds of Australians don't get enough physical activity. That's why State Sporting Associations do the community an invaluable service by promoting an active lifestyle, not to mention the mental health benefits their members get from fun and friendship.

"We are thrilled motorcycling in Victoria has taken the initiative to build on this great work by inviting more girls and women to get involved in the sport. Motorcycling Victoria is leading by example with their commitment to become more inclusive of the whole community and commitment to being a safe, accessible, inclusive and equitable place," Prof. Fitzgerald added.

Research shows women are less inclined to participate in sports than men. In fact, 24 per cent of women are involved in organised sport compared to 28 per cent of men. The rate of participant drops off steadily as women get older.

Factors responsible for the lower participation rate of women and girls in sport and physical activity include, but are not limited to, harassment, cultural and social pressures, social stereotyping, and lack of access to adequate and suitable facilities, and fewer opportunities available for participation.

There is more work to be done to ensure all sporting codes actively recruit women in leadership and decision making positions, design multipurpose facilities that cater for women and most importantly, create an environment which is safe, accessible, inclusive and equitable. 14 other State Sporting Associations in Victoria have also made commitments to make this happen.
